VU ICAT Hosts 60 Jasper Middle School Students & Their Teachers

CNC Machining, Robotics, and Mining Simulation Featured

"Hands-on" manufacturing technology education was the order of the day for 60 Jasper Middle School students and their teachers March 3 and 4 in the ICAT building. The students were divided into 6 groups of 10, and each group spent an hour cutting chips on full size Haas CNC machining centers, and manipulating 6-axis ABB robots, as well as seat time in the 5-DT mining simulator operating heavy equipment. Donna Taylor Bouchie of "Dream It Do It", Southwest Indiana Network for Education (SINE) arranged the workshops.

February 22-24 marked the first ever CNC Milling Level 1 NIMS class in the new HTEC training center at Vincennes University. Candidates from the Crane Army Ammunition Activity in southern Indiana completed the online portion of the training prior to coming to VU for the hands-on training and testing. On the third day of the training the candidates successfully programmed, set up, and machined the NIMS level 1 credential project 100% within the tolerances on the print. High Production Machining

The VU Manufacturing Club members that attended the High Production Machining seminar had a real eye opening experience. That was a good thing because the class ran from 8:00pm to midnight! The class rotated between the classroom and the lab to keep things moving. The Haas EC-400 pallet changer horizontal CNC machine was the featured machine for the class. Club members learned the art of high production machining from former Haas Automation Manufacturing Engineer Peter Bowman, who has logged many hundred hours on the EC-400 in the factory in Oxnard, California. Ten VU Precision Manufacturing Students Participate

The ICAT building was once again the place to be on a Saturday morning to learn about the "Art of machining Titanium". The class was a combination of first, second and third year Precision Manufacturing students. Flying-S Aerospace Manufacturing Engineer Peter Bowman was the instructor. Sandvik Coromill 210 and 316 high feed inserted cutters were used to demonstrate high material removal rates in Titanium. The Zoller tool presetter was also demonstrated.

Renishaw Metrology and Ball Bar 3-Day Class Completed

January 18-20 marked the second Renishaw Metrology and Ball Bar training class in the new HTEC CNC lab at Vincennes University. Renishaw provided training to VU educators and partners on the Haas CNC machining centers and turning centers using the new wireless QC20 ball bar kit. Renishaw trainer Paul Govan of the United Kingdom flew in to provide the training, and Mike Clodfelter of Clodfelter Engineering was on hand also to add his expertise with the ball bar and with the use of the Renishaw probes and software. The Gene Haas Foundation to Provide Scholarships to Educators

1/2 Off Training Cost for the First 30 HTEC Teachers that Enroll

The Gene Haas Foundation has generously provided scholarship funding in the amount of $20,250.00. The scholarships will be awarded to the first 30 HTEC teachers that enroll in the new CNC training courses at the Vincennes University HTEC CNC Training Center. To qualify for the 1/2 off tuition scholarship, which represents a $675.00 value, teachers just need to be employed as an educator at a member HTEC school. The training courses are open to anyone from industry, or to teachers from any school or training center, but this particular scholarship is only for educators from HTEC member school . . .
